Close-Up:
Jackson Pollock
In November 2006, the auction house Southeby’s brokered the sale of a painting by American abstract expressionist painter Jackson Pollock. Since its founding in 1744, Southeby’s has moved thousands of paintings, but this particular sale was notable for the price tag, a cool $140 million, making it the most expensive piece of art ever purchased. Ever. In the history of the world. And all that money for a work in a style that many critics have described as chaotic, meaningless, brainless, and idiotic. The painting, No. 5, 1948, is dizzying. To create it, Pollock laid a 240 x 120 cm. sheet of fiberboard on the floor and danced around it while dripping, drizzling, pouring, splashing, and flinging brown and yellow paint on it with paintbrushes, sticks, knives, and who knows what else. Layered lines of color pile atop one another; they twirl and shoot off in every direction. There is no subject and no center, every inch of it covered in the same twisting riot of motion. For centuries what mattered most to artists were subject, composition, and representation. Pollock disposed of all of these. But why? Were the critics right? Was Pollock just a talentless hack? Pollack himself said, “I want to express my feelings, not illustrate them.” For Pollack, the finished work was a simply an artifact of the moment of creation—the act of painting was the real art.
